Day 2: Officially our first day hiking! Unexpectedly long due to the cancelled flights. But we made it through anyway! We were supper happy and hopeful as we are finally on our long awaited journey to ISLAND PEAK! But that was still miles away. We enjoyed all the little things like the food, the air and the scenery. Before this, we had only seen these landscapes from pictures and videos. Seeing it in front of ourselves was surreal, it was so beautiful yet so unassuming. The day was longer than we expected and we hiked 1h into the dark before we finally reached Phakding, from Kharikhola.

This unplanned journey was also very insightful as we saw the stark contrast before and after we joined the main EBC route. Paths and buildings were a lot more developed once our paths converged. Cafes and bars started to emerge where before there were only small lodges.

I'm once again reminded of just how beautiful and powerful mother nature is.

Last week, we did a 3D2N expedition around Tioman island for a total of ~65km. It was such an experience. Fighting against and surfing on the waves at Juara, night kayaking and seeing bioluminescent as we paddle and also seeing a perfect double rainbow! I picked up kayaking as a means to enjoy and explore more of what nature had to offer and its finally starting to pay off 😋 Can't wait for more adventures ahead!

Also super grateful to all the friends that I've met on the trip that shared the same passion for the outdoors as me. Always a great time connecting through adventures 😁

Had a great trek last Sunday hiking for 9hrs! Ophir was a really fun to hike mountain, not too easy like Datuk, but not hard as well. Perfect for a day hike and training! Training hike around Mcritchie and Bukit Timah Hill.

Today we hiked around 15km in 4hrs carrying trek bags and all! Roughly the same time we would have to hike on day 1 and 3 of KorGa trek. Good training for our trip 3 weeks later. The rain really poured down on us towards the end and we all ended up drenched! Hahaha, should have been more prepared and brought our ponchos out with us. Also, I found out that my merrel shoe is starting to give way, might need to retire it after 1 last trip at KorGa.

Had my first comp climbing experience at @smugravical. Signed up for this late last year and didn't expect much. After transend where I didn't even send 1 route, I was pretty certain that it was gonna be the same here, so I decided to just take it easy and treat it like a fun climb. Although I didn't make it to the semis, I'm glad I joined the comp. I felt that the routes were still very tough for the qualifying round, but I'm super glad that I managed to send one of them! I wasn't expecting much at first, but after sending that one black route, I suddenly felt like semis was within reach had I just sent 1 more! But my excitement got the better of me. I kept trying for routes that I didn't have much luck with and were not my style, and in the end, I couldn't even zone those. After climbing for 2 years, it was really interesting to see how I compared to others in Singapore. it was a super interesting experience and I definitely learnt a lot about comp climbing in Singapore, and how to pace myself during competitions. would definitely go again for next year's Gravical!

Had a good time over the weekend with a crazy bunch! Paddled through the rain, which made the trip much more bearable as there was no sun. We had the current on our side for 90% of the time which helped ALOT. Even with the current, we took about 7 hours to complete including lunch. Cant imagine if we had to go against current 😬. Overall a super fun challenge, looking forward to the next expedition!

2018 MAY - Gunung Sumbing & Gunung Sindoro, Indonesia 3371M & 3136M

Sumbing and Sindoro are both in central Java, Indonesia located right next to each other. Our group hiked these 2 volcanos consecutives followed by mount merbabu afterwards.

Amongst the trips I have had so far, the views we had on this trip were by far the most amazing, picture perfect views we have seen! The pictures you see in this post are completely unedited pictures taken from just phone cameras and DSLR that we brought on the trip. We were incredibly lucky to have all the perfect conditions during our one trip, from cloudless days where we could see for miles in each direction, to a sea of clouds that surrounded our campsite, to clear night skies for star gazing. The sense of surrealism when atop the mountains was truely amazing. If you ever plan to Hike Indonesian mountains, I would suggest you to go during the dry season (April to October) to increase your chances at to catch views like these.

Now on to the hike itself. The hike for both volcanos were pretty much the same. Both are a 2D1N trip starting from Kledang village, hence I will just summarize the hike for both volcanos together.

On the first day, we started the trek in at about 10am in the morning from Kledang village. The hike is about 3-4 hours to the campsite where you can spend the rest of your time relaxing at the campsite enjoying the view and sunset. The next day, we start off at about 4am. I would suggest starting earlier as it takes quite awhile to reach the summit, and if you want to catch the summit sunrise starting earlier will help you. We reach the summit after about a 4 hour hike. The summit at Sumbing was quite a cramped space with rocks and sparse vegetation around. Sindoro's summit was much more beautiful, purely volcanic rocks around with the ocassional boulder jutting out. Both volcanoes are still active and emit sulphorous steam from its craters. You can sometimes smell the sulphur on the way up to the summit.

Had a good kayak and climb day at Passion Wave Pasir Ris on Sunday. First time trying the walls there. It felt really good climbing out in the sun! The routes were mostly quite juggy, so they are quite doable (but we havent tried the most inclined 2 walls yet). Had a few loose holds along the way, so we had a side mission of tightening the holds otw up! Hahahh

Met with @bikeguru.sg at the walls by coincidence! Learnt alot from him abt bike stuffs even tho it was just a short while. He gives really professional advice on all bike related matters so do check him out if you're into it! Had a good kayak and climb day at Passion Wave Pasir Ris on Sunday. First time trying the walls there. It felt really good climbing out in the sun! The routes were mostly quite juggy, so they are quite doable (but we havent tried the most inclined 2 walls yet). Had a few loose holds along the way, so we had a side mission of tightening the holds otw up! Hahahh

Met with @bikeguru.sg at the walls by coincidence! Learnt alot from him abt bike stuffs even tho it was just a short while. He gives really professional advice on all bike related matters so do check him out if you're into it! It always feels awesome to meet new people who are experts in their field and learning so much from them.

Chill hiking at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve on Hari Raya with @shuhhron @yonluuu @flymeaway__ . We saw so much wildlife today including 5092826 monitor lizards, a green tree snake, some copper lizard thing and the legendary tailless croc! Tailless lost its legs a few years back from fighting with another croc but its still alive today :) dam lucky to have seen so many creatures in a day!

2018 MARCH - Gunung tahan, Malaysia 2187M.

G1 of the G7 summits. Gunung Tahan is the highest peak in the Malaysian Peninsular. "Tahan" is a Malay word which when translated into English means "endure". Quite aptly named as some consider this the toughest hike in Malaysia. It is located in the Taman Negara National Park, north of KL.

There are 2 ways up Gunung Tahan. Route 1, the Kuala Tahan route, starts at Kampung Kuala Tahan. The return trip from here typically takes 7 to 8 days. Route 2, the Merapoh/Sungei Relau route, starts at Sungei Relau which is 7km from Merapoh. The return trip from here takes about 4 days. Our group took the shorter route, the Merapoh route, due to time constraints. Alternatively, you can also do a traverse from one side to the other which would take about 6-7 days.

Day 1: Before the hike itself, all hikers are required to go through a thorough bag check at the park office. Everything must be laid out for them to check what you bring in and will be checked against what you bring out at the end. Wet tissues and other chemical wipes are not allowed into the park. After checking, we took a 4WD to the actual start of the hike. The first day, although being the shortest, was around 4-5 hours of hiking. There were about 5 river crossings on this day, some were only ankle height, but some of the rivers reached waist level. Water levels can be higher depending on the season. The hike was mostly on flat terrain with slight elevation, but still slightly difficult due to the dense forest. we reached the campsite, Kem Kor, at around 4 pm and set up tents and made dinner. There was a river by Kem Kor which was the camp's water supply.

Pulau Ubin Trip!

Spent Vesak day on a solo trip to Pulau Ubin. Went to try out the mountain biking trails for the first time, but only did the beginner trails cus i sked (any pros can teach me next time?) After that, cycled to maman campsite which was closed due to covid. Lastly, went to Chek Jawa for a stroll before heading back to the mainland!

2018 JAN - Mount Kerinci, Sumatra, Indonesia 3805M

My second trip since I joined NTU ODAC. Kerinci is the highest volcano in Indonesia, followed by Rinjani then Semeru. Typically the trek to the summit and back takes about 2D1N.

The night before, we stayed at a local homestay not far from the starting point. Which let us begin our first day slightly later, more rested. We started our trek from the farms near it (2nd pic). the first day was relatively easy, a 4-5hr hike to the base camp which was located right at the edge of the treeline. The terrain on the first day started off as dense rainforest (though not as dense as Malaysia). It gets steeper the closer you are to the volcano with trees getting more and more sparse, eventually, only small shrubs are left near the campsite.

When we reached the campsite, there was still daylight and we managed to snap a few shots (pic 1 & 3) before the sunset. Because our campsite was at the treeline, the winds were very strong and almost blew our tents away.

The second day was long and arduous. we started at 3 am, hoping to catch the sunrise at the summit, which we missed by a long shot. Although we had only 400-500m of elevation to the summit, it took nearly 4 hours to reach it. This was because of the very steep, rocky volcanic terrain. Some parts of it were volcanic gravel, which made you slip down a little with every step you took. when we reached the top, we were unfortunately greeted with nothing but thick mist, like the one you see in the 5th picture surrounding the peak. This wasn't unusual, considering we visited during the rainy season in December. It is usually advised to visit in the summer months where there is less rainfall and clouds to block the view. Nonetheless, we were proud of our achievement of scaling the highest volcano in Indonesia! It was extremely cold at the peak as the mist easily condensed onto any surface that was available, making all our hair and clothes wet and damp. we quickly headed down back to the campsite for breakfast. After which we made our descent back to the starting point.

2017 SEPT - Gunung Rajah, Malaysia 1685M

This was where my trekking journey began. Other than a few simple day hikes and sec 2 OBS, I've never really been on a legit camping/trekking trip before this. The planning and logistics for multi-day hikes are crucial and very important to ensure a smooth trip, but ill talk about that in another post.

Gunung Rajah is located in Pahang, slightly south of KL. A short 30 min car ride can get you to the starting point. From there, its a 3D2N hike to the summit and back. It can be done in 2D1N, but the trip will be rushed and less enjoyable.

On the first day, is roughly a 3-4 hr hike to Lata Naning campsite. Lata Naning is a very spacious campsite with a river running right beside it. Its good for a refreshing swim and even has a mini plunge pool to play around in! Its pretty much the perfect spot to camp. The hike on the first day is relatively easy with mostly flat terrain.

After resting for the night, the second day is summit day. Its a 3-4 hr hike up and 2-3 hr hike down back to Lata Naning. The hike is very steep on day 2, sometimes requiring ropes to pull yourself up the path (see video). After reaching the summit, you're rewarded with a nice 360 view of the surrounding area, unfortunately its ALL trees and forest. If you're lucky, you may be able to see Genting on a clear day.

Day 3 is a hike back the same path to the starting point where you can rest up and go home. Sometimes there are people at the bottom selling food and drinks to reward hikers that finish the trek.

Difficulty wise, I'd give it a 4/10. Its main challenge is in its dense rainforest terrain and heavy bag packs that you have to carry if you go without porters.

Made a few new friends who are really passionate and knowledgeable about the sport. Its always very humbling to meet people who are experts in what they do and can share their experience with you! Time to up my game in next weeks 3 star course! ⭐⭐⭐
